In 2012, United States households spent an average of $2,900 on gas, reaching the highest prices in four years.
Another report by the Oil Price Information Service says Americans spent a record $479 billion on gas last year. More than two and a half times what the nation's fuel bill was 10 years ago.
As rising gas prices have dominated headlines over the past week, the average price per gallon in New York State is now up to $3.88.
