With the holiday season is in full swing lots of decorating is underway. As our Brooke Selby found out in Ballston Spa, a fresh cut tree may make all the difference.
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. -- It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Chip Ellms of Ellms Christmas Tree’s said "we start the day after Thanksgiving and close December 22nd."
“It's cool to know that you cut down a Christmas tree," said Molly Wolcott of Glenville.
Since 1984 the Ellms Family has been growing thousands of Christmas Trees on their farm in Ballston Spa for locals to cut and enjoy.
Ellms said "some of the trees are either Balsam, Frasier or Blue Spruce."
"Well it's family tradition to come out here, we've come out here for eight years now and it's a lot of fun to spend time with your family picking out the right tree," said Zach Wolcott of Glenville.
Even Charlie Brown would be surprised to learn how long the tree you bring home takes to grow. Ellms said "we buy trees that are four to five years old, so they are 12 to 18 inches tall and it takes about eight years to grow your normal seven or eight foot tree."
Christmas tree cutting isn't the only activity offered.
"We love the trolley, we love the family environment, you get hot chocolate after you cut your tree down, the trees are really pretty too, there's a great selection," said Greg Wolcott of Glenville.
When you get your beauty home, Ellms suggests some basic care.
"We recommend that when people bring their tree home if it doesn't go right in water, when they do get in ready to put in the tree stand to cut about a quarter to a half inch off the bottom," said Ellms.
